As recommended by The Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, women capable of falling pregnant should consume 400 µg folate daily from various sources such as supplements, fortified foods, or both. This should be on top of consuming food folate from a varied diet. Women's risk of having a child with a brain or spinal cord birth defect may be reduced by having sufficient folate in quality diets.
